DES MOINES - Duke Egli's state title hopes slipped away in the blink of an eye Friday night.

Fort Dodge's top-ranked 170-pound senior saw his perfect season come to a crushing end with a 5-3 sudden-death overtime loss to North Scott's No. 4 Mitch Bowman in the Class 3A semifinals at Wells Fargo Arena.

Egli, a three-time state qualifier, led 3-2 in the waning moments of regulation before eventually allowing a tying escape and decisive takedown, which took place right near the out-of-bounds line with 37 seconds remaining. A year ago, Egli pinned Bowman here in the 160-pound consolation bracket in a time of 4:45.

Fort Dodge’s Duke Egli tries to control North Scott’s Mitch Bowman during their 170 pound semifinal match on Friday night inside Wells Fargo Arena. Bowman rallied to defeat Egli, 5-3 in overtime.

"Duke lost a really tough match (Egli rode out Bowman for nearly the entire third frame), but he's a tough kid that laid it all out there," FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. "It's always hard when you don't come out on top, but we're not going to make any excuses."

In the quarterfinals, Egli blanked previously unbeaten and No. 2 Dustin Fuller of Sioux City North by a 9-0 count. Fuller appeared to suffer a right leg injury late in the opening period and was helped off the mat following the bout.

Up next for Egli (39-1 overall), who placed eighth at state last winter, is Pleasant Valley's No. 6 Brady Letney (46-6).

"When you have your dreams shattered, it's always difficult to come back," said Thompson. "Duke will need to be ready (today) because he's got another tough match."

No. 9 junior Riley Prescott (195 pounds) and 10th-ranked sophomore Erik Birnbaum (106) will now each go for seventh.

Prescott (30-16) was blanked by a 7-0 count in the quarterfinals against fourth-ranked Dane Jones from Oskaloosa. He then rebounded with a 3-2 overtime tie-breaker triumph against Ray Schroeder of Newton.

In his last bout of the evening, the two-time state participant Prescott was upended in a 13-3 major decision by Southeast Polk's No. 5 Ethan Andersen.

Birnbaum (37-8) picked up a 7-2 victory over No. 9 Jack Koethe of West Des Moines Valley, along with a 16-0 setback to Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson's seventh-ranked Colton Clingenpeel. The 10th-ranked sophomore will next be tested by No. 5 Sam Uthoff (31-9) from Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Freshman Cole Detmering (113) and junior Kole Evans (120) both failed to medal for the Dodgers. Detmering (32-15) was pinned in 1:31 by Fort Madison's No. 1 Bryce Meyer, while Evans (25-20) was stuck in 3:21 by seventh-ranked Danny Kelly of Cedar Falls.

A total of eight top-ranked individuals were knocked off in 3A Friday, including two defending state champions.

Class 3A consolation semifinals will take place around 11 a.m. this morning. Finals in all classes will start at approximately 6:30 p.m. tonight.
