Tritons roll in home debut

Iowa Central showed plenty of promise in its 2013 home opener on the baseball diamond here Thursday afternoon.

Snapping a mini four-game slide, the sixth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Tritons (15-7 overall) thumped Div. I foe Marshalltown by a 9-1 count at Ed Barbour Field.

After building an early three-run advantage, Iowa Central was never seriously threatened. The Tritons, who collected seven hits in the game, also erupted for five scores in the bottom of the seventh inning to win going away.

"(Weather-wise) it was seriously hands-down the best day we've played on so far this spring," ICCC head coach Rick Pederson said. "You never know how things are going to go with a different routine of playing that first home game in the middle of class, but we came out and put pressure on (the Tigers) from the start and played errorless baseball."

Dalton Parrott and Tyler Peyton each delivered two hits for Iowa Central. Parrott scored twice and added a RBI, while Peyton came home once and drove in a run. Dan Potempa also crossed the dish twice.

"I thought we were pretty bland offensively (ICCC stranded seven runners on base), but our bats will heat up with the temperatures," said Pederson. "We obviously didn't want to lose all four last weekend (at No. 3 Des Moines Area), but we felt we should've won at least two of those. We're still in good shape right now."

2B-ICCC: Tyler Peyton. HR-M: Simpson. CS -M: Bennett Mann. DP-M 2; ICCC 1. LOB-M 3; ICCC 7.

Starting pitcher Alex Hayden (3-2) notched the victory, allowing only two hits and one earned run over six innings. Hayden, who walked two and fanned five, retired the side in order three times.

Vinny Crivaro, Luke Vandermaten (Fort Dodge) and St. Cloud State recruit Nolan Webster each worked a scoreless frame in relief for the Tritons.

"We wanted to get Alex into a situation where the pressure wasn't quite as high, and he did a real nice job," Pederson said. "Our bullpen was also very good. All three of those guys (Crivaro, Vandermaten and Webster) can really help shorten the game for us."

Kyle Simpson went 2-for-3 at the plate for Marshalltown (9-9), which dropped its fifth straight outing. Simpson blasted a solo longball to left field with one out in the second for the lone Tiger tally.

Defensively, Iowa Central turned a crisp 1-6-3 twin killing to end the contest. Catcher Matt Molbury gunned down a runner at second base, as well, on a steal attempt.

The Tritons (0-4 in the ICCAC) return to league play Saturday at Southeastern (17-8, 4-0). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Burlington.
