ALGONA - Matthew Erpelding, a graduate of Bishop Garrigan High School, returned to Algona on Tuesday to work with the Algona Area Children's Chorus as part of a grant supported by the Haggard-Twogood Trust. Erpelding worked with the 25 singers in grades four, five and six and also visited area music classrooms to talk about what it means to be a composer.
The Algona Area Children's Chorus will premier his new composition, "Three," at 3 p.m. April 14 at First United Methodist Church as part of its spring concert.
Erpelding is currently the director of choral activities at Hopewell Valley Central High School in Pennington, N.J., where he conducts five curricular choirs, supervises student-led vocal ensembles, and acts as vocal director for both the high school and middle school musicals. Erpelding is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in choral conducting and pedagogy at the University of Iowa. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther College in Decorah, as well as a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Northern Illinois University. An award-winning educator, musician and scholar, Erpelding is a member of both the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Educators.
