BARNUM - One person died in a fiery crash that occurred on a rural Webster County road south of Barnum Thursday night.

Webster County Coroner Dr. Daniel Cole was called to the scene, an Iowa State Patrol trooper confirmed.

The identity of the deceased was not available at press time.

The crash was reported at 8:50 p.m. by a Webster County sheriff's deputy, who apparently discovered it while on patrol.

The vehicle went off the road along Dakota Avenue and into a ditch, where it burst into flames. Smoke was still rising from the ditch where the vehicle landed about a half an hour after the crash was reported.

The vehicle landed in the ditch on the east side of Dakota Avenue just south where the the Canadian National Railway Co. tracks cross the road.

A small structure near the railroad tracks appeared to have been knocked over by the vehicle.

The Barnum Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and Webster County Sheriff's Department were called to the scene, in addition to the coroner.
