Alvin Conkling, of Badger, was named an Outstanding Volunteer for 2012 by the Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council. The award was presented at the 23rd annual Urban and Community Forestry Awards Luncheon on April 2 in Johnston.
Conkling has been a leader in tree advocacy for years. In his 21 years in city government, both as councilman and mayor, Conkling helped drive a variety of tree planting projects, including memorials, parks, sports facilities and a windbreak for the town.
