The Messenger names scholarship winners

The Messenger has named its four Iowa Central Community College scholarship winners for the 2013-2014 academic year. The newspaper pays full tuition for the first year of study and the college pays half-tuition scholarships for the second year.

Recipients were evaluated in academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. Following is a sampling of their honors and achievements.

Michaela Beckman, daughter of Steven and Lori Beckman, is a senior attending Fort Dodge Senior High. She has served as president of the school's National Honor Society and editor of The Little Dodger student newspaper, has been involved with yearbook, theater, speech contests and Junior Civitan and has volunteered for the Special Olympics. She plans to major in secondary education and art, with minors in journalism and English.

Ashley McBride, daughter of John and Brenda McBride, is a senior attending Fort Dodge Senior High. She has served as student body treasurer and has been involved with cheerleading, drill team, Dodger Senate, tennis, track and the school musical. She was a member of the Iowa Cheerleading Honor Squad, was 2012 Co-ed State Cheerleading champion and is a four-year recipient of the CIML All-Academic Award. She plans to major in secondary education.

David Flattery, son of Terry and Jean Flattery, is a senior at St. Edmond High School. He has served on student council and is varsity co-captain of the football, track, basketball and baseball teams, as well as a member of the National Honor Society. He is a four-year recipient of the Athletic Academic Excellence Award, has been involved with choir, band, student council and school liturgies. He plans to major in physical education.

Ryan Lee, son of Todd and Nicole Lee, is a senior at Humboldt High School. He is a member of National Honor Society and the Student Senate, was selected to Iowa Boy's State and was named to all-district track, wrestling, soccer, baseball and football. He has been involved with Quiz Bowl and Knowledge Master Open. He plans to major in biology and medicine.

Nolan Mitchell, son of David and Sharon Mitchell, is a senior at Southeast Webster Grand High School. He has a member of student council and National Honor Society and is captain of the football, basketball and track teams. He has been involved with choir, musical, band and speech contest. He plans to major in nutrition science.
