James Richard "Jim" Tscherter, 83, of Glidden, Iowa died unexpectedly of natural causes Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll, Iowa.
Jim was born June 19, 1929 in Ft. Dodge, Iowa the son of John and Ruth (Cave) Tscherter of Palmer, Iowa. He graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1946 at age sixteen. He married Lucille Olson on March 31, 1950 at Mission Covenant Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. They lived in a number of communities in Nebraska and Iowa, including Avoca, Moville and Manson while raising their two daughters, Sue and Vicki. They divorced in 1979.
Jim held numerous sales positions during his career. He sold stocks and securities and owned an insurance and real estate office in Moville, Iowa in the 1960's. He later was employed selling campers and RV's in the Des Moines area before retiring and wintering in Texas each year.
He had a longtime love for music and dancing and filled his days attending jam sessions, live music events, and searching for bargain treasures. His evenings were spent enjoying dances. He had a zest for life, a gift for conversation that put strangers at ease, and could find humor in all situations. He maintained an interest in politics, current events, and following the stock market. He viewed each day as an adventure, always ready for a road trip, and lived life fully and in the moment.
Survivors include daughters Sue (Roger) Haworth of Pleasant Hill, Iowa and Vicki (Thomas) Elsen of Sioux City, Iowa. Grandchildren who fondly referred to him as "Grandpa Jim" include Scott Haworth, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Bethany (Thomas) Kinman, Indianola, Iowa; Brenna (William) Lambert, Plano, Texas; Brent (Regina) Elsen, Sioux City, Iowa; as well as six great-grandchildren: Jackson and Benjamin Kinman; Gavin, Gage, and Brielle Lambert; and Addisyn Elsen; special friend Ruth Davidson of Glidden, Iowa; a brother Donald (Estella) Tscherter of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Lucille and Harvey Berner of Manson, Iowa; as well as several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ruth Tscherter, and nephew Jeff Tscherter.
Final arrangements are being handled by Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home of Manson, Iowa. Condolences may be forwarded to the family through them. Per his wishes, his body was cremated and will be buried at Clinton-Garfield Cemetery in Rolfe, Iowa near his parents' graves.
A life celebration event for those who knew and loved him will be planned for later this summer.
