Three area cities have been awarded grants from a state program that helps to pay for removing or renovating abandoned buildings while limiting the amount of debris sent to landfills.
The awards from the Derelict Building Grant Program were announced Thursday by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Early in Sac County received $45,000 to take down the Payless Cashways building that was damaged in a tornado. That money will help pay for removing asbestos, doing an assessment to determine if there is any contamination on the property and dismantling the building.
Emmetsburg in Palo Alto County was given $3,750 to complete inspections for asbestos at 25 buildings.
Ruthven, also in Palo Alto County, was awarded $23,000 to dismantle two buildings.
