FD school board approves bids for track, truck

The Fort Dodge Community School District board Monday approved bids for a track for the new middle school and for a new food services box truck.

The board received two bids for the new middle school track. Iowa Athletic Field Construction Company of Webster City placed the lowest base bid of $461,777.

"We did find both bidders to be responsive and qualified for this project," Andy Brandel, I & S Engineering and Architecture, said. "We did feel that the bid from Iowa Athletic Field company was a good bid. It's below our estimates, not by a whole lot. It's a good price for your project."

The board chose an alternative to omit the construction of one of the shotput throws and one of the discus throwing areas, reducing the amount by $5,700.

One item, an outer two lanes on the track for a six-lane track, was kept at a cost of $53,980, which is included in the base bid.

"We felt there was some flexibility, if Iowa Central wanted to utilize it or if St. Edmond wanted to utilize it," Doug Van Zyl, FDCSD superintendent, said. "If we had competitions going on, at some point you could make it into a full competition area."

Bids for an irrigation system will be approved in May, ahead of construction of the track. The track is expected to be completed before the start of the 2013-14 school year.

The FDCSD board also approved a bid for a new food service box truck.

Marcy Harms, FDCSD director of student services and transportation, recommended a bid from Fort Dodge Ford at $32,810. The lowest bid came from Kemna Auto, but it did not meet the district's specifications, Harms said.

"The food service is currently driving a van that has 168,000 miles on it. It was totaled about two years ago. We've replaced the doors twice," Harms said. "The main thing is that it does not have a lift."

Another factor in her recommendation was that the Ford box was metal and the Kemna box was wood, Harms said.

Board member Jan Merz supported the decision.

"It's more in line with what we need," she said. "I would go with the higher bid."

Both bids were approved by the board unanimously.
