To the editor:
"It's time for baseball." Generations of young baseball players have heard that phrase echoing off the grandstand at Patterson Field. The voice behind that phrase belonged to Jerry Patterson. Unfortunately, that voice fell silent last fall as Jerry (in his own words) moved on to a new ballpark in the promised land.
Those who have played at the field or simply watched a game know the classic baseball atmosphere that Jerry created. The cheers from the crowd while they enjoyed their lemon shakeups coupled with Jerry's voice announcing player names gave youths the feeling of being a big leaguer, albeit if just for a moment.
As the Gypsum Hollow Teener League director, I am faced with the daunting task of continuing in Jerry's footsteps. There is no replacing Jerry Patterson because, quite frankly, he can't be replaced. Instead, his legacy, his field, his dream will be continued. However, in order to continue, we need the public's help. The Gypsum Hollow Teener League is a free league open to all and survives based on donations and volunteers.
We are actively looking for umpires and volunteers to coach. We also are looking for an individual or individuals to help with announcing. Any help is appreciated. If you have any interest feel free to contact me at 571-7453.
We are also looking for players. The league is free and uniforms are provided by our generous team sponsors. Even if you're not a player, come on out this summer and take in a game at Jerry's beautiful field - after all, "it's time for baseball!"
