FD school board approves sports sharing

Will continue existing agreements with St. Edmond, Prairie Valley

The Fort Dodge Community School District board on Monday approved cooperative sharing agreements with St. Edmond Catholic Schools and the Prairie Valley Community School District.

Approved were four separate sharing agreements for boys and girls soccer and boys and girls swimming and diving with both St. Edmond and Prairie Valley.

The agreements for the 2013-2014 school year are continuations of ones already existing between the schools and the Fort Dodge district. Doug Van Zyl, FDCSD superintendent, asked the board first if they wanted to continue with the dollar amount of $300 per student.

"It was $250, we raised it to $300 last year. If you want to stay at $300 you can do that, or you can make an adjustment," Van Zyl said. "But we would recommend this as an agreement that gets your approval."

Board member Bill Kent asked if this charge was enough to cover the district's costs. Van Zyl said he did not know.

"It's so difficult to tell, it depends on the number of kids in the program and how long that person is in there," he said. "It's better than nothing, like we used to get, so I think $300 is a pretty good deal. I'm comfortable with $300."

FDCSD board President Stuart Cochrane said after the meeting it is normal to approve such agreements.

"It's inconsistent, depending on the program, how many kids they want to bring to us, but as long as our coaches believe they can fill a need, we want to accept kids," he said.

Some sharing requests have been denied in the past, according to Cochrane.

"We've rejected some in the past where it looks like we have a number of kids already in our programs and we're not interested in expanding that," he said. "For the most part, when our coaches support the applications, we approve them."
