Freshman Robert Flattery tossed a complete game in his varsity pitching debut for St. Edmond Tuesday night, striking out 10 Prairie Valley batters in a 7-1 victory.

Flattery threw 110 pitches, 65 of which went for strikes. Hank Crimmins had three hits and four RBI, while David Flattery had two hits, including a triple, for the Gaels (2-0 overall).

"Robert was throwing his fastball for strikes and that's why we let him throw that many pitches," SEHS head coach Joe Shanks said. "We have an off day here so we can rest our arms, as this is going to be a long week on our staff - which is already short-handed."

St. Edmond defeated North Union on Monday night, throwing three pitchers in no-hit victory. They travel to Manson Northwest Webster Thursday night before hosting Bishop Garrigan to begin North Central Conference play back at Rogers Park Friday, where they are 58-11 since 2008.

"With kids still competing in tennis and golf (both have state events later this week), we've been forced to use some younger kids," Shanks said. "But they are doing a good job despite being inexperienced.

"We're still growing, and it's pretty obvious we just need more reps, at-bats and time in the field to grow."

The Gaels plated two runs in the first inning against Warrior (0-2) pitcher Trey Kehoe, as Crimmins and Tommy Setterdahl each belted RBI doubles.

Another pair of St. Edmond runs came across in the second, while three more were added to the scoreboard in the fourth. Matthew Bocken, Ryan Szalat and Crimmins - the first three hitters in the Gael lineup - had five hits, four RBI and six runs scored, while also stealing three of St. Edmond's five bases.

"Hank had a nice night at the plate, as did David," Shanks said. "We kind of forced Robert to throw probably 20 more pitches than he should have because of some defensive errors we made."

Kehoe, who struck out four batters, also had two hits to lead Prairie Valley. Clayton Taylor added two hits, while Brandon Ure drove in a run for the Warriors, who face East Sac County on the road Thursday night.
