Murman, Stover set for state return

CEDAR RAPIDS - Brian Murman and Andrew Stover will make their second straight appearance in the Class 2A state tennis doubles field beginning Friday at Veteran's Memorial Tennis Center.

The Fort Dodge duo qualified as district runners-up, meaning they will draw a district champion in the opening round.

Last year, Murman and Stover went 1-2 a year ago, earning a consolation first round victory.

"Brian and Andrew have really developed as a doubles team over the last two years and that experience should give them confidence heading into the state tournament," said FDSH head coach Jared Feddersen, a former state placewinner in doubles himself.

Murman, a sophomore, played the No. 1 singles spot for the Dodgers this past season, while Stover, a junior, was pegged into the No. 2 hole. The pair also competed in the top doubles spot, facing several state qualifiers throughout the year.

"Over the past couple of weeks, Brian and Andrew have played the defending state champs twice (Ames' Alex Qin and Tommy Pitcher)," Feddersen said. "They know the caliber of play that they need to be at to make a run in the (state) tournament."

Qin and Pitcher were the district champions in Carroll over Murman and Stover. They entered state last year as unseeded juniors and dropped just one set on their way to state gold.

The two teams from Ames and Fort Dodge are the lone doubles pairs back from last year, but nine other qualifiers return, including Iowa City West's Adam Dellos and Kyle Appel.

Dellos and Appel played together last year, but split this year and advanced with new teammates. Linn-Mar's Trevor McMann earned a fifth last season in doubles and is with a new partner, and fellow returning qualifier, John Kuster.

Cedar Rapids Washington's Mitch Blades, Clinton's Ryan Schroeder, Ankeny's Luke Benna and Tabor VanDePol and West Des Moines Valley's Tommy Maigaard all return as qualifiers.

"Coming into the state tournament as a district runner-up with the doubles field as deep as it is this year," Feddersen said, "means that Brian and Andrew will have to come out at a high level in their first match."
