Today, more than 100,000 senior adults will be participating in activities at more than 1,000 locations across the nation to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
Locally, Friendship Haven will be hosting a day of activities for senior citizens beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. in the Celebration Center. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. and include several exercise classes and informational workshops.
"The last Wednesday in May is always National Senior Health and Fitness Day," said Megan Ridgely, wellness coordinator at Friendship Haven.
The activities are not limited to residents of Friendship Haven, Ridgely said.
"Everything will be open to the public," she said. "Anyone can come out and bring a friend. Everyone will get a goody bag and have the chance participate in the classes."
From 6 to 11 a.m. there will be free exercise classes, fitness demonstrations and a balance presentation. At 1:30 p.m. an inspirational video featuring the stories of older adult athletes will be shown in the Celebration Center and at 3 p.m. an aquatic exercise class will be offered in the Friendship Haven pool.
The event is free and registrations will be accepted at the door. Those not preregistered should arrive around 8:30 a.m. to register.
"Anyone can come to one or all of the sessions," said Ridgely. "There is a schedule to choose from but everyone should sign in at registration."
