ANKENY - St. Edmond's senior duo of Ellen Chalstrom and Mary Eide will each bring home another medal from the Class 1A state singles tournament after keeping their seasons intact Thursday at the Ankeny Tennis Complex.
Chalstrom, a four-time state qualifier, advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories. After downing Waverly-Shell Rock's Liz Rucker by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 in the opening round, Chalstrom recorded a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 quarterfinal triumph against Onis Souissi of Glenwood.
"Going in, I thought Ellen had a pretty good draw overall," said SEHS head coach Tyler Philipsen. "She did what she was supposed to do (yesterday) and showed good mental toughness. I can see she's really driven right now."
Following a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Cedar Rapids Xavier's Allison Jasper, the second-seeded Eide rebounded with consolation wins over Makenzie Richmond of Centerville and Independence's Janna Wilkinson. Eide, a three-time state placewinner, prevailed by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
"I kind of knew Mary's side of the bracket would be pretty tough to play in," Philipsen said. "(Jasper) didn't allow Mary to play her game and just kind of frustrated her, but she figured things out after the first round."
Eide went 3-1 last year at state to claim bronze, while Chalstrom won her last four matches for fifth after falling in the opening round.
Chalstrom will now face No. 1 seed Carolyn Ahlers of LeMars in the semifinals at 10 a.m. here this morning. Eide will meet an opponent to be determined in the consolation semifinals at 9:30 a.m.
