Scouts seek $10,000 to complete effort

Leaders of a Scouting district that includes Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs in six area counties are working to wrap up a fund-raising campaign that's intended to generate $42,000.

Donations and pledges to the Friends of Scouting campaign are being accepted.

''This money helps to keep Scouting strong in the district,'' said Jim Dean, the senior district executive for the Twin Lakes District.

That district includes Calhoun, Humboldt, Kossuth, Pocahontas, Sac and Webster counties.

''Scouting doesn't come cheap, but yet it's one of the finest organizations for youth that's ever been,'' Dean added.

He said 99 percent of the money raised stays in the district.

So far, $31,645 has been raised. The district needs $10,355 to reach its goal.

''The last $10,000 or so goes the slowest,'' Dean said.

The campaign started early this year with an appeal to family members of Scouts. Dean said that effort generated $12,000, which was a 30 to 33 percent increase from the previous year. He added that the district was the first one within the larger Mid America Council of the Boy Scouts of America to reach its goal for the family portion of the drive.

The Friends of Scouting campaign generates 28 percent of the district's income, according to Dean. He said that's the largest single source of income.

A group of fund-raising team leaders have been key to the effort, he said. In Webster County, those team leaders include Kraig Barber, John Bruner, Dr. Nicholas Drzycimski, Dan Flattery, Rob Gunderson and Don Woodruff.
