ANKENY - St. Edmond seniors Ellen Chalstrom and Mary Eide finished their Gael careers as two of the top players in program history.
The Gael classmates etched their name into the record books, with the likes of Erin Kersten and Kathrine Trevino (the schools two state champions), with Top-six performances at the state meet.
"These two had wonderful careers at St. Edmond,'' said St. Edmond head coach Tyler Philipsen. "I was defintely proud of them. It's not the way they wanted to finish, but they had great careers and strong state finishes.''
Chalstrom finished fourth and Eide was sixth. The Gael duo qualified a combined seven times and had five Top-six performances between the two of them.
Chalstrom, who finished fifth last season, lost a decision to top-seed Haley Resnick of Davenport Assumption. Resnick won 6-3 and 6-2. In the third place match, she lost to Ashlee Sinnott of Waterloo Columbus 6-0, 2-6, 1(3).
"Ellen's first match was tough against Resnick,'' Philipsen said. "She fought hard.
"In the third place match, she went three sets after winning a do-or-die set two. It was a tight tie-break set.''
Eide, who finished third the past two seasons, won her consolation semifinals match agains Ons Souissi of Glenwood, 6-4 and 6-2.
She then lost her fifth place match to Kate Walker of Red Oak, 6-4 and 6-2.
"Mary won her first match and felt comfortable and confident,'' Philipsen said. "In the fifth place match against Walker, she knew it was going to be tough and just played hard the entire match.''
