WEST DES MOINES - Facing a pair of ranked foes, the Fort Dodge softball team went 0-2 at the Valley Invitational on Saturday.
After suffering a 4-3 setback to No. 9 (Class 5A) West Des Moines Valley in their opener, the Dodgers (5-2 overall) were blanked by top-ranked (5A) Pleasant Valley in a 7-0 decision.
Mallory Kilian went 3-for-4 with a RBI in game one, while Lani Van Zyl chipped in two hits and a run scored.
FDSH took a one-run lead into the top of the seventh inning, before the Tigers (4-5) roared back on a three-run homer from Katelyn Strauss. The Dodgers stranded 10 baserunners in the game, including the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position in their final at-bat.
"I was disappointed," said Fort Dodge head coach Andi Adams. "I would've been happy with a split, but the only thing we can do is learn from our mistakes and the other teams. Playing great teams will only make us better."
Against the Spartans (4-1), the Dodgers received singles from Kilian and Madi Bennett. Fort Dodge was unable to overcome five costly errors.
