MARSHALLTOWN - The Fort Dodge baseball team opened up conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Marshalltown Monday night.
Following a 5-0 shutout in the opener, the No. 9 (Class 4A) Dodgers (5-2 overall, 2-0 CIC Northern Division) recorded a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.
"Our guys came out hungry (last night) and wanted to start out conference play on the right foot," said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. "I think the big difference from this weekend was that our pitchers got ahead and were shooting the knees. They looked a lot more sharp and were a big key in getting us rolling."
Tommy Halligan and Parker Van Zyl each went 2-for-3 in game one for FDSH. Halligan also drove in a pair.
Starting pitcher Tyler Vaughn (2-1) earned the win, working six scoreless innings. Vaughn actually took a no-hitter into the fifth.
"It was good to see Tyler set the tone for us early," Utley said. "JC then came out and backed him up in the second game. When our pitchers are throwing well, the Dodgers are a pretty tough team to beat."
