Dodgers sweep Cedar Falls

June 8, 2013
By JOHN McBRIDE sports@messengernews.net

One night after tossing a no-hitter, sophomore Mallory Kilian showed she can swing the bat as well, smacking home runs in each game as the Fort Dodge softball team swept Cedar Falls at Harlan Rogers Park Friday night.

Kilian settled down after a rough start to the opener and helped the Dodgers to a come-from-behind 7-5 victory. In the night cap, the Dodgers exploded for 10 runs in the first frame and rode Cassie Tjebben's four-hit pitching performance to a 12-1 five-inning victory.

The sweep capped a 5-0 week for the Dodgers and moved them to 10-2, their best start since a 12-2 start to the 2009 campaign.

"We talk about everyone doing their job and we have girls that go out and do that," said Dodger Coach Andi Adams. "It was good to see everyone get a chance to play and I feel so comfortable doing that with all of them."

The Dodgers fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first to start the opener as the Tigers scored five unearned runs after an error kept the frame going.

"I said to the girls that's what happens when you think you can just walk into a game and (win)," said Adams. "Cedar Falls can hit the ball and they did all that with two outs. I wasn't worried, though, because I know our offense can score runs. We were so tense and we play worse when we are that way. I just wanted to calm them down."

Kilian allowed just two hits the rest of the game, finishing with a 5-hitter. She struck out four along the way. She also helped her own cause with a triple and a home run.

"When Mallory is on she can hit anything. She's been our most consistent hitter this season," said Adams. "Even if she's struggling pitching I can count on her to hit the ball."

The Dodgers started to chip away at the Tigers' lead right away, scoring two runs in the first, second and third to take the lead for good. They added a single run in the fourth.

Lexi Astor scored three times from her lead-off spot and finished with four stolen bases.

Fort Dodge wasted no time in the second game, getting 10 runs in the bottom of the first. Kilian just missed a home run with deep double in her first at-bat of the frame. She cleared the fence the second time up in the inning for a 3-run shot that made it 10-0.

Tjebben added a double in the frame while Astor, Madi Bodholdt and Kilian each scored two runs in the first frame.

Cedar Falls (1-9) got a home run from McKenzie Sesterhenn for its only run of the second game.

The Dodgers added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, getting a double from Riley Hartman in the frame.

Astor and Kilian each had two hits in the night cap. Maddie Egli also scored twice.

"After that first game (we) were angry," said Adams. "We didn't think we played well. They just exploded. I am so proud of them all.

"I thought Cassie did a great job. She got ahead of batters all night," Adams added.

The Dodgers return to CIML Northern Division play Monday hosting Mason City in a doubleheader. First pitch for the JV is at 4:15. The game has been designated "Big Bat Bash" night. All fans ages 5 and under will receive a plastic bat and ball and there will be a home run derby for those kids between varsity games.

Last night, the Dodger JV rolled to a 14-1 victory. Megan Gibson had 10 strikeouts while Toryn Pederson had three hits. McKenna Teske, Riley Hartman and Molly Mathes added two hits each for the Dodgers, now 3-2.
