Lord’s Cupboard fills a need

To the editor:

As my one year anniversary as director of the Lord's Cupboard approaches I'd like to express my gratitude, faith and excitement in our community. The Lord's Cupboard is the largest food pantry in Webster County serving an average of 325 households a month feeding 9,412 individuals in 2012.

My goals as director are 1) healthy choices 2) client education towards self-sufficiency and 3) community involvement and hunger awareness. Every donation of food, volunteer time and, of course, money is prayerfully used towards these goals.

This spring we were grateful for successful food drives from The Messenger Home and Garden Show, Scouting for Food, Stamp Out Hunger, UnityPoint Health, the Eagles Club and the Congregational Church. Iowa Select distributed pork loins, and NEW Co-op and Land O' Lakes employees used the Iowa Healthy Living challenge to lose more than 600 pounds and donate more than $1,200. Target employees helped with painting and other spring cleaning projects.

As we enter summer our need grows immensely with kids out of school. In Iowa, one in every five children does not have enough to eat. Please keep the Lord's Cupboard in mind through this time. I can provide collection containers, organize tours and projects or speak to your group. I have lots of ideas and simple ways to incorporate the Lord's Cupboard into your summer. Monetary donations can be mailed to 127 N. 10th St. as well as nonperishable food or garden produce drop off. I can be reached at lordscupboardfd@hotmail.com.

Blessings around your family tables.
