AGWSR made its first-ever state tournament experience a memorable one.
In a Class 2A quarterfinal, the No. 8 Cougars (28-7 overall) rolled past 11th-ranked Jesup by an 8-2 count Monday at Rogers Sports Complex.
After plating three runs in the first inning, AGWSR delivered the knockout blow with a five-spot in the fifth.
Sophomore ace Ashley Sicard (28-4) went the distance in the circle for the Cougars, scattering eight hits and two earned runs. She fanned seven.
Sicard previously blanked the J-Hawks 4-0 and 11-0 earlier this season.
"It's just a great feeling to be able to win that first one," said Sicard, who came into state with a 0.71 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 198 innings. "I was feeling a little pressure at the start, but I kind of settled down after we scored some runs."
