Johnston clubs Valley

Runs came early and often for No. 5 Johnston in a 10-0 Class 5A state quarterfinal victory over eighth-ranked West Des Moines Valley Tuesday night.

Hannah Berger and Lauren Thilges each went 3-for-4 offensively for the Dragons (31-11 overall), who jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Berger also scored three times, while Thilges doubled twice and drove in four.

Haylee Towers (20-5) went the distance in the circle for Johnston, allowing just two hits. She didn't walk a batter and fanned two.

Katelyn Strauss and Mckenzie Schuette both managed singles for the Tigers (26-15).

No. 3 Ottumwa (37-6) now awaits Johnston in a 5A semifinal Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Diamond 2.
