Chester A. Sumpter, 85, of Fort Dodge, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the Church of the Nazarene in Fort Dodge with the Rev. Gary Snook officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery near Lehigh, Iowa with military honors. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene in Fort Dodge. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
Chester Arnold Sumpter, the son of Dana and Ester (Lake) Sumpter, was born June 2, 1928 in Battle Creek, Iowa. Chester lived in Battle Creek until he entered the United States Army in September of 1950 and served in the United States Army for two years. After his discharge from the Army in September of 1952, Chester moved to Fort Dodge and worked for Georgia Pacific for 36 years retiring in 1990. Chester married Audrey Carpenter and she later passed away on January 26, 1976. He later married Pauline Olson and she passed away on May 7, 1996. Chester was one who loved to travel.
Chester is survived by his sister, Edith (Vern) Bennigsdorf of Montrose, Colorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Audrey and Pauline; a sister, Ida Heldt Watson and a brother, Charles Sumpter.
Chester was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He served on the church board, served as an assist Sunday School Teacher, usher and kept the church attendance records.
