To the editor:
The Last Dance of the Bohemian Hall will be held at the Eagles in Fort Dodge on Aug. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. Five longtime members of the rural Bohemian Community whose grandparents, parents, or they themselves managed and danced at the Bohemian Hall will host the dance. For the members hosting this event, the hall was not only the place we danced on Sunday night, but was also the center of our community and the place we had funeral luncheons, bridal showers, wedding receptions, and other numerous events. It was where we celebrated our Bohemian heritage, as the original hall was built in 1899, by people of Czech decent who had homesteaded the farmland and were finding their way to create community and be there for one another. A new hall was built in 1939, which allowed more space and a better dance floor for the Bohemian community to share their love of music and dancing with anyone who wanted to attend.
As we trust that many people have memories of having danced at the hall, or have heard stories of their parents dancing at the hall, we are hosting one last free dance for people to gather, to share stories and to dance to the Malek Fisherman Band, who had played at the hall for many years. Although the Bohemian community was no longer able to maintain managing Sunday dances, and had sold the building to a private owner, we want to gather to also acknowledge the loss of the building that burned in a fire on Aug. 3, 2012.
