A man involved in a motorcycle accident in Webster County late Wednesday has died after being taken to a Des Moines hospital for treatment.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the man Thursday morning as Steven D. Coppinger, 51, of Fort Dodge. He was pronounced dead at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

According to ISP Lt. Kelly Hindman, Coppinger was traveling east on Webster County Road D20 - approximately one mile north of Duncombe - at about 8:45 p.m. on his 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. As he was going south out of a curve on the road, Coppinger lost control of his motorcycle.

Hindman said the motorcycle flipped, which caused Coppinger to be thrown from the motorcycle. The Harley ended up on the west side of the road.

Another motorcyclist witnessed the incident, but was not involved.

Coppinger was first taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Iowa Methodist where he was pronounced dead.

Hindman said Coppinger was not wearing a helmet.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. In addition to TRMC, ISP was assisted by the Webster County Sheriff's Department and Duncombe Fire Department.
