DAKOTA CITY - The two newly elected members of the Humboldt Community School Board were sworn in Monday.

Suzanne Newton said she wanted to experience firsthand the workings of the board.

"Our oldest child just entered the public school here in Humboldt," she said. "Never having attended a public school myself, I wanted to know more of the inner working of the district."

Janell Smith said she hopes to see changes in the district.

"I have an older son that just graduated from Humboldt and I felt the school district was very inefficient for him," she said. "I have an eighth-grader right now and I'd like to see things improve and make some good changes."

School board members Trina Carda and Rick Pedersen did not seek re-election.

In other business, the board voted to take over the middle school baseball program.

The Humboldt recreation department had been running the program.

Superintendent Greg Darling said the rec department would provide equipment and uniforms for the school to take over the team.

The athletic boosters have offered $5,000 of the $7,000 Darling said was needed to help the program get started.
