As part of the expansion, the Kemnas purchased Ron's Car Wash Inc., 2524 First Ave., S., and Ron's Lube & Oil, 2518 First Ave. S. Both were owned by Ron and Pam Vincent. Those businesses closed Oct. 9.
Ron Vincent said the decision to sell came at an ideal time because at age 67 he was ready to retire.
Both Kemna and Vincent characterized the acquisition as a win for both parties as well as an upbeat and friendly transaction for both families.
"We didn't want to compete with Ron's," Carey Kemna said. "Ron has been in Fort Dodge for 38 years. ... He ran an absolutely wonderful business. A lot of people knew him, loved his car wash, did service work with him. ... We wanted to be a good neighbor and help him out. ... He's at that retirement age where he was kind of ready."
Vincent echoed that thought.
"I thought it was perfect timing," he said. "It worked out very well. We wish Ken and Carey and the whole Kemna team well. They have been wonderful."
Vincent said past patrons who still have unredeemed car wash tickets will be able to have them honored at Kemna's new car wash once it opens in 2014.
Looking back on nearly four decades in business in Fort Dodge, Vincent said there is much for which to be thankful.
"My wife and I have enjoyed having wonderful customers and employees," he said.
Vincent said his immediate plans involve spending more time with family members than was possible when operating a small business that consumed a great deal of his energy and schedule.
