ANKENY - For a second straight year, junior Alex Jackson will represent the Fort Dodge boys at the state cross country meet.
Jackson, ranked 30th, moved on with a fourth-place individual effort, clocking a time of 16:11 at a Class 4A district meet here Thursday.
"Alex ran a good race to finish fourth," said FDSH head coach Tim Hanson. "There was a big gap after the top three runners, but four through 10 were really tight, which shows how strong our district was.
"I was a little worried about halfway through the race when Alex was eighth or ninth, but he definitely did a good job of moving up. It was nice to see him qualify for a second time, and hopefully last year was a good learning experience for him to make the correct changes."
Thomas Thompson (17th, 16:47), Austen Read (36th, 17:24), Ryan Wagner (40th, 17:40) and Cole Detmering (47th, 18:08) rounded out the Dodger scorecard. In the team race, Fort Dodge placed fifth with 144 points. No. 8 West Des Moines Dowling (33), fifth-ranked Ames (64) and No. 12 West Des Moines Valley (68) all advanced.
"I thought we ran pretty well as a team to finish only four points out of fourth (behind Indianola)," Hanson said. "Thomas also ran a good race and finished about right where he was going in."
On the girls side, the Dodgers checked in seventh with 240 points. No. 2 Ames (37), top-ranked Dowling (37) and 13th-ranked Ankeny Centennial (80) paced the field.
Madison Bodholdt (40th, 17:01), Anna Taylor (47th, 17:43), Sydney Crotts (50th, 18:03), Megan Nebel (51st, 18:05) and Katarina Olson (52nd, 18:11) were Fort Dodge's counters.
"Hopefully, our girls had fun and ran their best, which is all you can ask for," said Hanson. "Madison ran good in her last race and has nothing to be ashamed of. I hope she enjoyed going out all four years."
Dowling's No. 3 Ryan Schweizer (15:38) took home gold in the boys race, while his sister second-ranked Karissa Schweizer (14:07) was the girls champion for the Maroons.
The 35th annual co-ed state meet is set for Nov. 2 at Fort Dodge's Lakeside Golf Course inside Kennedy Park.
