RUSSELL O. MUNSON

MANSON - Russell O. Munson, 98, passed away on Oct. 28, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society - Manson. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wed., Oct. 30, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Manson, where he was a lifelong member. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson. Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Munson is survived by his brother Lester Munson of Manson, IA, and many friends who hunted and fished with him or who stopped at his home frequently to visit. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Dorothy Pogeler Munson.

Russell Oscar Munson, the son of Martin and Augusta (Johnson) Munson was born February 19, 1915, in Sherman Township, Manson. He received his education at the Manson Schools graduating from Manson High School in 1933. Before WWII, he was employed in California for seven years and then enlisted in the United States Army. He was a sergeant in the Army in the European and Pacific theaters and was awarded the Bronze Star. He served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Okinawa. After the war, he moved to the family farm west of Manson which he operated after his parents retired and moved into town.

Mr. Munson was a lifetime member of the Otto Alfred Lunbom Post No. 2349, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, Post 204, Manson. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his summer home at Twin Lakes. Russell also traveled extensively visiting many states, including Alaska, to hunt and fish, and traveled often to Lester and Dorothy's home in Florida. He was a member of the Manson Gun Club, and was an artist who painted, did woodcarving and some taxidermy.

Active until his final days, Russell will be remembered for his knowledge gained by living a long life with many interests.
