HUMBOLDT - Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt will host a Veterans Day program at 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the church titled "Sit with a soldier, listen to a vet." The church will also celebrate the service of all veterans at its regular worship at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. Nov. 10.
"Sit With A Soldier, Listen To A Vet" will recognize all branches of the service. Many vets are reluctant to tell their story before a large group of people. In response to this reluctance, Pam Davis organized this event. Humboldt High School students in Doug Van Pelt's history classes interviewed 24 veterans who have served from World War II to Afghanistan. The students then wrote up a report on the interview. The reports or a brief summary of the vet's story will be presented at the celebration. The report will be read and the vet and student recognized.
There will be a time for fellowship following the celebration with cookies and coffee being served. A freewill offering will be received and directed to the Brushy Creek Honor Flights - two honor flights are being scheduled for 2014. Military Bears dressed in a uniform of each branch of the service will be on sale for $30 with the proceeds from the sale of these bears go toward future Honor Flights. Veterans from WW II and Korea have gone on the Honor Flights.
"This is a way for all of us to hear their (the vets') stories, to honor them and to show what went into us having the freedoms we have today," Davis said. "The community is welcome to attend as we honor all our veterans over this Veterans Day weekend."
