The Children's Giving Tree is now available at Walmart. Sponsored by St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the tree is a way to bring warm clothing to disadvantaged children age 12 and under in Webster County.
The children's names are provided by Head Start, the Domestic/Sexual Assault Outreach Center, the YWCA women's shelter and area social workers. Last year, the Giving Tree provided packages to nearly 560 kids.
Gift givers can pick a card off the tree with the first name, age, sizes and any special needs of a child.
While organizers ask the public to buy warm winter clothing for the child, they also say participants may "throw in something fun" with the gift. Gifts should be unwrapped.
Those wanting to help can also purchase a gift card for a child. Giving Tree organizers will do the shopping and send you a receipt of what was purchased for that child. Monetary donations will also be accepted to buy clothing for children whose names are not taken off the tree.
All donations are due by Dec. 13.
Volunteers are invited to help wrap the presents from 1 to 9 p.m. Dec. 16 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 239 N. 11th St.
