Fischer — 90 years old

EAGLE GROVE —Merlin Fischer, of Eagle Grove, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday.
Cards may be sent to him at Rotary Senior Living North, 500 Blaine Ave. S., Eagle Grove, IA 50533.
His family includes his wife of 62 years, Marlys, Thor; Marlin Fischer, Huntsville, Ala.; and Marla and Walter Lorentzen, Eagle Grove.
Fischer grew up on a farm near Rockwell. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Iowa State Teachers College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He later earned a master’s degree in mathematics and engineering. He was the principal and taught mathematics at McGregor High School and served in the same positions at Ventura High School where he was also an assistant coach. He taught 11 years at Eagle Grove High School and Junior College. He was charter head of the mathematics and engineering department at Iowa Central Community College, where he taught at the Fort Dodge campus for 22 years and for Buena Vista College in the summer. He also operated the family farm for many years.
