Any hopes of the Iowa Central volleyball team making a third straight and fifth-ever trip to nationals slipped away here Saturday afternoon.
The second-seeded Tritons (19-24 overall) were ousted by No. 1 seed Des Moines Area in a NJCAA Div. II Region XI A final at Hodges Fieldhouse, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.
Kennedi Simon tallied seven kills and one and a half blocks for Iowa Central, while Kelci Larson added 19 digs and nine kills.
Both Simon and Shelby Schindler (Bishop Garrigan) were named to the all-region tournament team for their performances.
Schindler and Caitlin Poppen (Manson Northwest Webster) each played their final match for the Tritons.
"We battled DMACC and played extremely well, but (the Bears) didn't give in much," said ICCC head coach Fredrick Wagner. "Shelby and Caitlin were our team captains, but the strength of our team will be back next year."
With their fifth consecutive victory, 14th-ranked DMACC improved to 33-10 on the season. The Bears are coached by Patty Harrison, who started the Iowa Central program back in 1983. Kaitlynn Vought (Humboldt) and Kenzie Grimm (West Bend-Mallard) each see regular action for DMACC.
In yesterday's Region XI B championship, second-seeded Southwestern knocked off No. 1 seed and seventh-ranked Kirkwood, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.
