Expo Pool, the summer swimming spot for generations of Fort Dodgers, will soon be just a memory.
All traces of it should be removed by the end of this year as a result of a demolition contract awarded Tuesday by the City Council.
The council hired Rasch Construction Inc., of Fort Dodge, to do the demolition work at a cost of $73,085.
Lori Branderhorst, the city's director of parks, recreation and forestry, said the buildings will be demolished and the pool will be removed from the ground. The hole left by the pool will be filled in, and the area will become a neighborhood park.
Branderhorst said the asbestos is being removed from the buildings this week. When that's done, she said, the demolition will begin. The work should be done by December, she added.
Hovey Construction Inc., of Fort Dodge, submitted the only other bid for the job. That company's price was $145,130.
Expo Pool on North Seventh Street closed in 2009 in advance of the debut of the aquatic center at 10th Avenue North and 32nd Street.
In another park-related matter, the council took two actions related to Loomis Park, which is along the Des Moines River between North Seventh Street and Hawkeye Avenue.
Council members voted unanimously to approve the first reading of a measure to vacate the road that runs through the park.
They also voted unanimously to approve the first reading of a measure to rezone all of the park to a conservation designation. Now, the park is a mix of light industrial, multifamily residential and single-family residential zoning.
Branderhorst said visitors to the park won't notice anything different as a result of those changes. Both changes require two more affirmative votes of the council to become effective.
The road will still be owned by the local government, according to Carissa Miller, the associate city planner.
In other business Tuesday, the council:
- Approved the first reading of a zoning change that would allow the construction of townhomes in the Orchard Glen neighborhood near 20th Avenue North and 15th Street.
- Accepted the extension of First Avenue South 1,700 feet east of 32nd Street as a public street. It was built by TJK Enterprises to serve the Fort Frenzy entertainment center.
- Sold city-owned property at 927 Fourth Ave. N. to Danielle Fogelman, of Fort Dodge, for $70,000.
- Sold a 20-by-100-foot section of an alley in the 100 block of South 21st Street to Greg and Jamie Bemrich for $50.
- Gave final approval to placing the property of Kemna Auto of Fort Dodge at First Avenue South and 25th Street in a tax increment financing district.
- Gave final approval to rules governing the pretreatment of wastewater by certain industries.
