Cross Country event succeeds

November 18, 2013
Messenger News

To the editor:

I am writing to thank the Fort Dodge area community for your strong support of the National Junior College Athletic Association's National Cross Country Championships that were held at Lakeside Golf Course. It was amazing the number of remarks received from athletes, coaches, and parents on how inviting our community was to them.

Iowa Central hosted 70 schools and over 600 runners in the men and women divisions. Our women won the national championship for their third consecutive title, which two of our runners placed first and third in the women's championship race, while our men's team placed second nationally.

We will be bringing the National Championships back to Fort Dodge in 2015 and 2017, with the hope of hosting other national events in the future. Iowa Central really appreciated the strong support the Fort Dodge Convention and Visitors Bureau; Webster City Chamber of Commerce and North Central Iowa Regional Sports Authority provided Iowa Central and visiting teams and fans. All of these events bring national exposure to Iowa Central Community College, the Fort Dodge area, and the state of Iowa.

We would also like to give a big thank you to the city of Fort Dodge, particularly City Manager David Fierke; Parks and Recreation Director Lori Branderhorst; and Lakeside Golf Course Superintendent Chad Graaf. The city and golf course staff were very good to work with and helped make the weekend a big success. I also need to recognize the Iowa National Guard with a special thanks to Captain Guerttman and Sergeant Brager. This event wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Fort Dodge American Legion, Fort Dodge Senior High School and St. Edmond Catholic High School. A final thanks to The Messenger for the coverage of the event.

In addition, I would like to thank, Dee Brown, head cross country coach at Iowa Central; Denny Myers, head track and field coach at Iowa Central; Rick Sandquist, Iowa Central athletic director; and all of the volunteers who made this national event such a big success. Without their leadership this event would not have been as successful.

Dan Kinney

President, Iowa Central Community College
