GENE M. RATHERMEL

Gene M. Rathermel, 83, of Fort Dodge, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, November 20, 2013 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge. Gene requested that his body be donated to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City and no services. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services are handling all arrangements.

Eugene "Gene" Melvin Rathermel, the son of Ernest and Lillian (Walters) Rathermel, was born November 18, 1930 in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1949. He attended two years of college and on March 28, 1953 Gene married Elaine Will. Gene and Elaine had three sons, Mick, Kent (Harry), and Tim.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine. Michael "Mick" (Danielle) Rathermel of Fort Dodge and they have three children, Cristin Long (Micah) and their two daughters, Madelynn and Julianna, and Joe Rathermel; Kent (Bea) Rathermel of Denver, Colorado and their two daughters, Meghan Rathermel and Alison Rathermel; Tim (Penny) Rathermel of Cunningham, Kentucky and their two children Kinsey Rathermel and Keaton Rathermel.

Gene is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Caitlin Rathermel; his parents, and a brother Bob Rathermel.

Gene was the owner of Rathermel Advertising Agency and later Management Consultant. He was very active in many organizations, The United Funds, Boy Scouts of America, served on the Republican Committee on Publicity and the Director of Art Federation. He was also very active in Junior Chamber of Commerce, President of the Jaycees in 1962-1963 and is Past President of Sertoma Club. Gene has served as Director of the Blanden Art Museum and served on the Elderbridge Board and SCORE. Gene had many interests, but his two greatest loves were his family and sports. In his younger years, Gene had the honor of being the Fort Dodge City Tennis Champ.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family and mailed to the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services at 1615 North 15th Street, Fort Dodge, IA 50501.
