Iowa Central Community College music students will raise money for their department and Share What You Wear in the coming weeks.

For a suggested donation of $30 or more, the students will go out into the community, visit businesses and sing carols, according to Kathleen Schreier, vocal music director.

"There's been some budget cuts here at the school, and in approaching our students about the need to help out the budget, some of our students had ideas about fundraising," Schreier said. "The ideas initially came from the students."

The fundraiser is similar to the department's previous Valentine's Day efforts, Schreier said.

In addition to raising funds for the music department, the students will also be raising funds for Share What Your Wear, which takes place Dec. 7.

"Every year we do different types of fundraising for Share What You Wear, and we were trying to be creative about what we can do to utilize our students in the fundraising process," Kris Nerem-Lowery, Iowa Central TRIO coordinator, said. "Knowing the choir was truly gifted and had some wonderful talent to share, we thought we'd approach the music department about assisting us with fundraising."

Fact Box

To book a performance of the Iowa Central student carolers, call 574-1252.

A donation of $30 or more is

suggested.

Funds are needed for Share What You Wear, Nerem-Lowery said, to cover the food served to and provide a gift for every person who comes through its doors.

"As they come through, they can pick up one gift per person. For many people it's the only new Christmas present they have under the tree," she said. "It's important to us to do a fundraiser so we can offer that to the community."

For a donation, vocal music students will carol at businesses, either to employees in a specific area or to customers passing through.

"They would call in to our contact phone number, set up an appointment and then they would come in during that time slot and perform," Nerem-Lowery said.

A flash mob could also be arranged, Schreier said.

Students will perform Monday for Share What You Wear donations, and Dec. 19 for the Iowa Central music department.

"We'll go to the same place twice if we're asked," Schreier said. "These are kids who love to perform."

Nerem-Lowery said she appreciated the effort, and enjoyed partnering with the vocal music students.

"I think it will be great," she said. "It's fun that we're collaborating. It's exciting that they want to do this on a day off, when they're on vacation and willing to come in and do fundraising for the college and Share What You Wear. I think that's a great thing about our students, and their generosity."
