Dodgers top Lynx

December 3, 2013
By JOSH MEYER sports@messengernews.net

WEBSTER CITY - Head coach Tom Daniel was encouraged by the performance of his Fort Dodge boys basketball team in its season debut Monday night.

Showing few signs of rust, the Dodgers (1-0 overall) earned a decisive 69-51 road victory over Webster City.

"There are a lot of positives we can take away from a win like this, but I still think there's room for improvement," Daniel said. "We pressed for almost the whole game, which we just weren't able to do at all last year. We even put up 69 points offensively, and we left some more out there, too. Our guys are light years ahead of where they were at the same point last season."

FDSH, which never trailed in the contest, forced 29 Lynx turnovers with its relentless full-court defensive pressure. The Dodgers jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter, while extending their commanding advantage to 37-19 at the break.

Senior Zach Martinson netted a game-high 26 points for Fort Dodge, including 19 in the first half. Classmate JC Hatcher was next in line with 17 points. Fifteen different Dodgers saw action, with 10 of those cracking the scoring column.

"(Webster City) played zone (defense), which I don't expect us to see much of this season because of our shooting," said Daniel. "Martinson stepped up and had a nice night for us, but we also had several other guys chip in and make contributions."
