By JOSH MEYER sports@messengernews.net

Momentum continued to be built by the Iowa Central men's basketball team here Wednesday night.

Winning for the fifth time in their past six games, the Tritons (7-4 overall) hammered ABCD Prep by an 83-45 final at Hodges Fieldhouse.

After jumping out to a double digit lead at the break, Iowa Central opened the second half on a 23-4 run. The Tritons never trailed in the contest.

"We had a heck of a team effort," said ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher, who earned his 771st career victory last evening. "This was a big win for us, and I was proud of how our guys played in the last 20 minutes. (ABCD Prep) just got back from Idaho, so I think fatigue obviously played a factor (Wednesday), too."

Reserve guard Justin Lawler delivered a game-high 18 points for Iowa Central, including 14 in the second half.

Jesse Jones (15), Javonte Young (11) and Ky Kramer (10) were the other top offensive performers for the home team.

"Lawler and Young were both big for us off the bench," Pilcher said. "(Luke) Guenther also came in and gave us a spark. I suspect he'll probably move up the ladder now behind (starting center) Jasmin (Biberovikj) for Tuesday's game at Kirkwood."

Fourteen different Tritons saw action Wednesday, with 10 of those cracking the scoring column. Iowa Central finished with a 37-20 advantage in bench points, while outrebounding ABCD Prep, 45-26.

"I thought we did a pretty good job defensively of guarding No. 21 (Emmanuel Malou), who is real athletic," said Pilcher. "Offensively, we moved the basketball well to find the open man. Jasmin really helped us, too, with some nice moves in the post."

Behind the arc, the Tritons went 13 of 26 compared to 0-for-15 for the visitors.

Mark Dean Jr. paced ABCD Prep with 12 points, while Malou added nine. Malou, a 6-foot-9 small forward from Australia, has Div. I offers from Iowa State, Memphis, UNLV, West Virginia and Kansas State.

Merrick Mackdanz-Marble also plays for ABCD Prep, which is based out of Des Moines. Mackdanz-Marble, the son of former University of Iowa star and ex-NBA player Roy Marble, is a half brother of current Hawkeye standout Devyn Marble.

In their earlier meeting this year back on Nov. 2, Iowa Central posted a convincing 89-50 triumph over ABCD Prep at the Southeastern Classic in Burlington.

Next outing for the Tritons is Tuesday at No. 11 (NJCAA Div. II) Kirkwood (7-3). Tip for the ICCAC opener is set for 7:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
