Edwards gets 30-year maximum sentence

A Fort Dodge man who admitted to sexually abusing a child has been sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.

Christopher T. Edwards, 35, received 10 years in prison on each count of third-degree sexual abuse, to which he pleaded guilty on Oct. 14.

He admitted to sexually assaulting a young girl, identified in court documents as being "under the age of 12," on Feb. 20.

The guilty pleas were a part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

While Edwards and the victim's family both declined to make statements, Judge Thomas Bice had words for Edwards before ordering the sentence.

Bice said the details of the crime were "disgusting."

"Frankly, the nature of these crimes, from this court's perspective, is repulsive. Disgusting," he said. "It indicates a certain predatory attitude on your part."

Because of the seriousness of the crimes, Bice said Edwards going to prison is the best option for both "the protection of the victim and the community."

"There's nothing good about what you did here," Bice said. "It demands that you go to prison."

In addition to the maximum 30-year prison sentence, the plea agreement that Edwards agreed to also states that once he's released from prison, he will be "under supervision as if on parole," and must register as a sex offender.

The no-contact order between Edwards and the victim will also remain in place for five years. It can be extended at the request of the victim or her family.
