An apartment and truck were damaged by gunfire after Fort Dodge police say shots were fired during the evening on New Year's Day.

The shooting was first reported to police at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers responded to the apartment complex at 2648 Fourth Ave. N. after the resident of unit three, Michelle Leith, reported hearing shots fired, according to Assistant Police Chief Kevin Doty.

Leith said a "projectile" went through the west wall of her living room, then went through a second wall before stopping inside her microwave.

Three people were inside the apartment at the time. Doty said none of them were hurt.

Investigators don't believe Leith's apartment was the intended target.

Besides the apartment, Doty said a 2007 Ford F-250 Super Duty truck, which belongs to Blake Peterson, 20, of 2638 Fourth Ave. N., unit F, was struck by a bullet.

As of Thursday afternoon, investigators hadn't determined if the truck was targeted by the shooter, Doty said.

Doty also said investigators don't believe the New Year's Day shooting is connected to the four shootings that were reported on Christmas Eve.

"We do not believe this incident is connected with the incidents that occurred on Dec. 24," Doty said, but he said that investigation is still open.

Police are asking for the public's assistance in solving both the New Year's Day shooting and the Christmas Eve shootings.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call the Fort Dodge Police Department at 573-1426 or Webster County Crime Stoppers at 573-1444. Tips can also be sent online at wccrimestoppers.com or by texting "LEC" and the tip to 274637.
