Weather forces athletic cancelations

January 5, 2014
By CHRIS JOHNSON sports@messengernews.net

With extreme temperatures hitting the area and even colder weather expected for today, the majority of Messenger-area schools have canceled for today.

Fort Dodge and St. Edmond made the decision around noon on Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to reach a low of negative double digits with wind chill values from 25 to 45 bellow zero through out the day.

A Wind Chill Warning will remain in effect until noon on Tuesday.

The wind chill values are expected to be the coldest in nearly 20 years over much of the area.

Athletic activities can continue if there is no school, however it is different for each school district.

"If we don't have school, most of the time we don't have activities,'' said Fort Dodge athletics and activities director Matt Elsbecker. "In a case of dangerous temperatures, everything is canceled.''

Fort Dodge had three athletic events on the calendar for today.

The Dodger boys and girls bowling teams were scheduled to travel to Southeast Polk to face the Rams and Dowling.

The Dodger boys swim team was headed to Ankeny and the wrestling team was supposed to compete at Dowling.

Elsbecker said make up dates may be announced today.

St. Edmond had no athletic events scheduled for today, but according to athletic director Joe Shanks, there are two different versions of the cancellation process.

"If a storm is coming in and school is in session and we dismiss, there are no activities,'' Shanks said. "We may have a short practice after school, depending on what the administration decides.''

If school is canceled before the day and students haven't arrived, activities can still be held.

"On days when we don't have school (at all), we wait until noon to make the decision to either practice or play,'' Shanks said. "For example if a storm blows through and the streets get cleaned off and everything looks safe, we could play a game that night.''

Other area schools canceling for Monday are, Algona, Bishop Garrigan, Clarion-Goldfield, Corwith-CWL, Eagle Grove, East Sac County, Emmetsburg, Humboldt, Laurens-Marathon, Manson Northwest Webster, Pocahontas Area, Prairie Valley, South Central Calhoun, Southeast Webster-Grand, Webster City and West Bend-Mallard.

Temperatures will be a little warmer on Tuesday and in the 30s by Friday and Saturday.
