EAGLE GROVE - Fresh off its first appearance of the new year, the St. Edmond wrestling team hits the mat again tonight in a North Central Conference triangular with Clarion-Goldfield and Eagle Grove.
Start time is set for 6 p.m.
"We're finally getting back to full strength now, so this is a big momentum meet for us," SEHS head coach Tanner Utley said. "Our schedule really picks up in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, we can come out and get the ball rolling in the right direction."
Following a 42-34 setback at Algona on Friday, the Gaels (1-3 overall, 1-3 in the NCC) are motivated to turn the page and get back on track. Payton Sitzmann (132 pounds) and second-ranked (Class 1A) Vinnie Harvey (285) each collected falls for SEHS against the Bulldogs, while Connor Allison (138) registered a major decision.
In addition, Cole Allison (106) and Colin Birzer (120) both prevailed by decision. Winning by forfeit were No. 4 Ryan Szalat (113) and second-ranked Kaden McClintock (126).
Szalat (10-2 overall), Sitzmann (10-6) and Harvey (13-0) have all reached double figures in victories this season for the Gaels. Szalat, McClintock and Harvey are each defending state placewinners.
106 - Cole Allison, fr. (1-0) or Colin Birzer, so. (9-6); 113 - Ryan Szalat, jr. (10-2); 120 - Kaden McClintock, sr. (5-1); 126 - Payton Sitzmann, so. (10-6); 132 - Connor Allison, fr. (7-7); 138 - Daman Perry, jr. (1-5); 145 - Jack Kersten, so. (0-10); 152 - Open; 160 - Kyle Lawler, sr. (1-8); 170 - Hank Crimmins, sr. (6-12); 182 - Jimmy Averill, sr. (5-4); 195 - Nick Hindt, jr. (8-7); 220 - Vinnie Harvey, sr. (13-0); 285 - Caelan Burbank, sr. (4-8).
The No. 11 (1A) Cowboys (6-2, 2-2) feature sixth-ranked Joel Haberman (132), No. 5 Taylor Lehman (138) and third-ranked Mitch Gambrill (285). Austin Weland (113), Devon Omvig (145) and Dylan Huse (152) pace the Eagles (2-4, 1-3).
"Clarion graduated some guys, but they've been real competitive in all of their duals, so we need to be ready," said Utley. "I know Eagle Grove is still in a rebuilding process. If we come out and wrestle aggressively for a full six minutes, I think we can be right there against both teams."
Last winter, the Gaels dropped a 40-33 decision to the Cowboys, while blanking the Eagles, 84-0. Kurt Morgan's Clarion-Goldfield squad placed fourth in the 1A state duals tournament a year ago.
