CLEAR LAKE - In a battle of No. 4 ranked teams in the state, it was the Clear Lake girls coming out on top.

The fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Lions used a strong fourth quarter to hand No. 4 St. Edmond (2A) its first loss of the season, 66-56.

Clear Lake (9-1 overall, 9-0 in North Central Conference) outscored the Gaels (10-1, 9-1) 23-11 in the final eight minutes of action.

"We just had a few costly turnovers that they turned into points late," SEHS head coach Scott Messerly said. "We had to foul and they hit their free throws, which made it a 10-point game when it was even closer throughout."

St. Edmond led by seven at halftime and two heading into the final quarter before Logan Anderson and Trudy Peterson took over for Clear Lake.

Anderson posted 24 points and Peterson 17, as the duo combined to hit seven three-pointers.

Quarter scores: Tied 15-15, St. Edmond led 33-26, 45-43.

"I was really impressed with Logan," Messerly said. "She did a great job of taking the basket to the hole and was effective coming off the pick-and-role with her three-point shooting.

"Peterson also played a nice game for them."

Anna Yung led the Gaels with 24 points, while Jaci Stumpf added 14. Stumpf also dished out 10 assists and Yung five.

Alli Huss, the NCC's leading scorer, was held to just eight points. She did grab 10 rebounds.

"They did a great job of doubling Alli," Messerly said. "We also missed nine free throws, while they hit 20 of 25.

"Still, despite the loss, this was a good game for us to have. We had to battle down to the end; we just couldn't get a big shot to fall in the fourth."

St. Edmond returns to action on Tuesday when they head to Clarion to face the Cowgirls.
