IOWA FALLS - In its most complete performance of the season, the Iowa Central men's basketball team stunned sixth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Ellsworth by a 95-82 final on Saturday.
After trailing by double figures early in the game, the Tritons (13-8 overall, 3-2 in the ICCAC) outscored the Panthers 86-63 the rest of the way.
"It was probably the best 40 minutes of basketball we've played in the last three years," said ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher. "Our margin for error is not that big, so we knew we'd have to come over (to Iowa Falls) and play great. We took care of the ball, knocked down shots and did a good job on the boards. It was just a tremendous team effort."
Dylan Travis paced Iowa Central with 30 points. Jesse Jones (21), Javonte Young (15) and Winston Yergler (11) were next in line offensively for the Tritons.
"I think our guys really showed the potential they have," Pilcher said. "(The Panthers) are a lot more talented than us, but we played hard and smart. Dylan hit about a 40- or 50-footer at the half, which really gave us some momentum. We came out in the second half then and never really let them get back into the game."
Iowa Central actually built a 15-point advantage in the second half. Ellsworth (14-4, 2-2) never got closer than six down the stretch.
Winners of four straight games, the Tritons visit No. 16 Des Moines Area (16-4, 3-2) on Wednesday. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. in Boone. The Bears dropped a 78-65 decision Saturday at Iowa Lakes.
