Fort Dodge Senior High will host a district Large Group Speech Contest Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

It will comprise more than speeches.

Lindey Krug, speech instructor, said that students compete in categories including One Act Play, Readers Theatre, Choral Reading, Short Film, Radio Broadcasting, Solo and Group Mime, Group Inprov, Musical Theatre, Ensemble Acting and TV News.

There are several benefits to the students.

"The competition promotes communication skills," she said. "They have to be able to effectively convey a message."

It also, she said, helps the students gain self confidence when speaking and performing in front of others.

During each performance, the students are judged by a panel. Once they have completed their piece, they are given feedback which gives them another benefit.

"They have to be able to take directed criticism and apply it," she said.

She said that about 30 students from FDSH will participate. Students from other schools in the area, including St. Edmond, Southeast Webster-Grand, Manson Northwest Webster, South Central Calhoun, Newell Fonda and Prairie Valley are part of the 21 teams expected.

Students in ninth through 12th grade participate.

Krug said the public is invited to attend the event. There is a $3 requested donation per person. Parking is available in the east parking lot.

Photography, video and audio recording is not allowed during the performances.
