Hitting their stride

Lynx knock off Gaels

February 5, 2014
By DANA BECKER sports@messengernews.net

Marty McKinney knew his Webster City boys would have to take some lumps early on in the season starting three sophomores and being an underclassmen-dominated lineup.

Now that the calendar has flipped to 2014, the Lynx appear to be finding their rhythm, defeating St. Edmond here Tuesday night, 57-48.

Mason Myers scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Alec Fuhs scored 13 and Colt Richardson posted 10 and eight boards for Webster City (8-8 overall, 8-6 in North Central Conference).

The balanced effort by the Lynx off-set a 33-point, 14-rebound performance by Gael (12-6, 11-5) Robby Burke that included 23 points in the opening half.

No other St. Edmond player, though, scored more than six points, as they lost for the fourth straight time. The Gaels shot just 14-percent from the three-point line and were outscored at the free line stripe by Webster City, 17-5.

"We knew it would be a rollercoaster ride early on with three sophomores starting and a roster filled with underclassmen," said McKinney, who has seen his Lynx go 6-3 in their last nine games overall. "But I think we're starting to put it all together here as of late."

That "putting it together" started with Myers, who had 11 in the first 16 minutes. He poured in 11 more in the third quarter alone, helping Webster City to a five-point advantage heading to the fourth.

Over those final eight minutes of action, the Lynx went 11-for-11 at the line, including a 5-for-5 performance from Fuhs, who is one of those three starting 10th-graders.

"We have really been hitting our free throws over the past few games," McKinney said. "We were 8-for-8 and 9-for-9 in our two games last week in the fourth quarter, as well.

"It's something we have a lot of confidence in."

Webster City used an early 8-0 run to take an 18-10 lead before St. Edmond was able to string together a 14-5 burst to take just its second lead of the game, 26-23.

Burke tallied the first 23 points of the game for the Gaels before Konrad Laufersweiler made a three-pointer with just over two minutes to go in the half.

"Robby really had a great game," said SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer, who is now 21-18 all-time vs. the Lynx. "We had a lot of open looks, they just didn't fall. That's part of the game, though, and our kids just have to learn to keep playing through it when the shots aren't falling."

The Gaels got it to within two a handful of times in the second half, but a 10-2 run by Webster City that was capped off by a three-point play from Fuhs, turned it into a free throw contest.

Landon Peed had six points and six assists for St. Edmond. T.J. O'Tool also dished out six assists, as the Gaels had 11 as team.

Webster City returns home for a battle with Humboldt this Friday night, while St. Edmond hosts non-conference foe Pocahontas Area Thursday.
