ROCKWELL CITY - The St. Edmond boys basketball team passed their first tournament test here on Saturday, ousting South Central Calhoun on its home court by a 60-47 final.

Senior power forward Robby Burke scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Gaels (16-6 overall), who will now face East Sac County (19-3) in a Class 2A, District 3 final on Tuesday in Manson. The Raiders outlasted Manson Northwest Webster last night, 61-56.

''I thought our defense really stood out,'' SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. ''We held them to a little over 30 percent from the field, which will win you a lot of ballgames. We made them really work for every basket they had.

''Robby had a great game. He never quits working on either end of the floor, and the team did a good job of getting him the ball deep in the post. Landon and T.J. (O'Tool) did a nice job defensively getting to (SCC's leading scorer, Jake) Petzenhauser.''

Fellow senior Konrad Laufersweiler added 12 for the Gaels, who were eliminated in the district finals by East Sac County last season. Juniors Landon Peed (nine) and Matthew Bocken (eight) followed.

Sam Spencer and Petzenhauser both had 16 points for the Titans, who bow out at 16-7. South Central Calhoun trailed by eight points at halftime, but fell behind by 19 after three quarters.

''We always emphasize how important that (third period) is,'' Kochendorfer said. ''To stretch that lead from eight to 19 was just huge. It gave us some much-needed breathing room, because the longer you hold a single-digit lead on the road, the more susceptible you are to getting caught from behind.''

The Gaels now face the Raiders at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for a berth in a Substate 2 final, which will be March 1 in Webster City.
