Ask Marilyn: Would Math Be Different If We Had Eight Fingers?

Rensie Cavanaugh of Greenbrier, Arkansas, writes:

Marilyn: If man had eight fingers instead of ten, would our math be different? If so, is there any way to calculate what that math would be like?

Marilyn responds:

Everyday math is based on the number 10, but many bases are possible. Computers, for example, use a base of 2—called "binary." A brief description of base 8 can be found here.
